GATEHOUSE OF FLEET  Dumfries and Galloway  DG7 2HS
tel: 01557 814774  e-mail  map
Open: April to October 7 days 10.30 - 5.00
20,000 books (incl some new and remainders) Most subjects but some emphasis on art, poetry and childrens. We are usually open during the winter at weekends and by appointment.
A medium sized general stock and a bit cramped in some sections with books piled up on the floor in front of the shelves.Average prices. - Allan Campbell.
Gatehouse of Fleet is a village just off the main A75 road from Dumfries to Stranraer and this shop has a medium sized selection of books in the loft area of a renovated mill a short walk from the village's public car park. The loft area is very open with large areas with little in them but the area with the book is cramped, with the bookcases too close together for two people to pass and all too often have books piled on the floor in front of them up to three shelves high. This leaves you with the impression that something could be there but you would never
be able to find it. - Jeremy Briggs.
I can only agree with the comments already on the guide. I managed to find one book to buy but gave up looking for more when I realised that, not only were there large piles on the floor but those on the shevles were often double-banked. A pity because the (apparent) owner was friendly. - Martin Stallion 10.06.08.
There are some interesting books at the bottom of those piles, but strong knees (or better cushions to kneel on) are needed, plus patience and plenty of time. - Richard 29.07.09.

  map
A medium sized bookshop crammed almost to the ceiling with books but well organised nevertheless, and only a short walk from the pedestrianised city centre or the train station. As implied by its name, it has an excellent selection of children's books and (perhaps inevitably in the home town of D C Thomson) a large selection of children's annuals and football & war digest-sized comics. For those browsers looking for something more grown-up, general fiction and non-fiction are also well catered for. - Jeremy Briggs.

General, mainly non-fiction. Emphasis on Scottish; sports, pastimes & the natural world. Owner conversant on a wide range of topics. Feel free to pop in for a blether.
At the east end of the High Street towards the Tourist Information Office, you will probably walk straight past it if you are expecting it to look like a bookshop. Bizarrely this is a traditional tobacconists with cigars and such like in the small front room which you go through, up a handful of steps and into the small book room at the back. The emphasis is mainly non-fiction with books on a table in the centre of the room and in bookcases around the walls. Several of the ceiling panels have literary themes with one covered in paperback covers, one in Oor Wullie comic strips and one in pages of a 1960's TV21 annual. The structure of the shop is therefore rather more interesting than its selection of books. - Jeremy Briggs 07.07.08.

A few new books, good secondhand modern paperbacks & hard back fiction. Large selection of non-fiction, especially Scottish, sport, military, topography and some antiquarian. Now one of the Borders biggest secondhand, old and out of print bookshops with 19000 titles in stock and many more in store.
Easily found and also easy to park at, while it does have a small selection of antiques don't let that part of its name put you off. This is a medium sized shop with a good selection of books in a village in the Scottish Borders between Peebles and Galashiels. It has one main room with two smaller ones at the back and while perhaps a little cramped when there are a lot of browsers, it is worth going out of your way to visit. - Jeremy Briggs.

Small stock of new and second hand books. The stock of new children’s books and one or two toys is misleading as the proprietor’s attitude makes it plain that children are definitely NOT welcome in the shop.
- Laura.
I would just like to contradict the previous review by Laura. I've been taking my three young children to buy books for them at the bookshop and I have never felt that they were anything other than welcome in the lovely childrens' corner. I've always had friendly and extremely knowledgeable service. - Lewis 01.10.08.

Medium-sized antiquarian and secondhand bookshop specialising in Slavonica, foreign language titles, classics and biographies of scientists. Booksearches and intermediary work undertaken, particularly within Eastern Europe.
The description of this shop on their website, giving the impression of a highly specialised shop, put me off looking for Midnight Oil for quite some time. In a side street about five minutes walk from the west end of Kirkcaldy's High Street, it is indeed a medium sized shop with both antiquarian and secondhand books. Yet the stock is much more general than I expected with paperback and hardback fiction, and some children's books, as well as the more specialised titles they advertise. With a friendly welcome and easy parking this is a shop worth returning too.
- Jeremy Briggs 07.07.08.

Mitchell's Second Hand Books
The shop has gone but they still do the best bookstall every Saturday and Sunday at Kinross market. - Jeremy Briggs.

A paperback section at the front for Moffat's many tourists, then a good non-fiction section with Scottish, warfare, poetry, British history.etc. Friendly owner, who also advises on walking and where to have lunch. - Jane Slater 20.01.10.
